DHEA (Dehydroepiandroserone) is a hormone that is secreted by the adrenal gland and is also made in the brain. DHEA is a precursor to androgen and estrogen production (male and female sex hormones). DHEA levels in the body begin to decrease after the age of 30. Levels have been shown to decline more rapidly in women. Lower levels of DHEA are typically found in those with hormonal disorders, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, depression, diabetes, inflammation, immune disorders, and osteoporosis. Corticosteroids, oral birth control, and agents that treat psychiatric disorders may reduce DHEA levels.
