Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a hormone that is secreted by the adrenal gland and is also made in the brain. DHEA is a precursor to androgen and estrogen production (male and female sex hormones). DHEA levels in the body begin to decrease after the age of 30 and levels have been seen to decrease more rapidly in females. Lower DHEA levels have been found in people with hormonal disorders, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, depression, diabetes, inflammation, immune disorders, and osteoporosis. Corticosteroids, oral birth control, and agents that treat psychiatric disorders may cause a reduction in DHEA levels.

DHEA-Sulfate is an important adrenal hormone to assess overall adrenal health, especially in someone experiencing adrenal fatigue or chronic stress. It is also a vital "pro-hormone", which can be converted to both testosterone and estradiol (E2) in the body. This test is important to monitor when on oral DHEA treatment, while DHEA, serum is important to monitor when on topical DHEA treatment.
