Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) is an essential nutrient that must be obtained via the diet. Thiamine serves a role in the biosynthesis of acetylcholine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Thiamine also facilitates the production of reducing substances involved in oxidant stress defenses, as well as for the synthesis of nucleic acid precursors.

Alcoholism and malnutrition are common causes of thiamine deficiency. Deficiency can also occur due to impaired gastrointestinal (GI) absorption related to disease or bariatric surgery. Hyperthyroidism, pregnancy, lactation, and systemic infections with or without fever are conditions that increase metabolic requirements for thiamine and have been associated with thiamine deficiency.

Symptoms of thiamin deficiency include fatigue, irritation, poor memory, sleep disturbances, anorexia, abdominal discomfort, and constipation.

The Vitamin B1 (Thiamine), whole blood test is useful in the assessment of thiamin deficiency.
