Glucose, Fasting LabCorp
The Glucose Fasting Test measures glucose levels to help diagnose diabetes and prediabetes, among other conditions.

What is this test?
The Glucose Fasting Test measures natural glucose levels without the influence of food or sugary drinks, which is why fasting is required. These levels can diagnose diabetes types 1 and 2, along with prediabetes and gestational diabetes. Though less common, glucose levels can also be elevated because of other conditions, including hypoglycemia caused by insulinoma (a small tumor on the pancreas), hyperthyroidism, pancreatitis, and neuroglycopenia.
Glucose is the body’s main source of energy. Insulin is the biochemical responsible for transporting glucose into the cells. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes effect insulin levels, which can lead to an accumulation of glucose in the blood. This can have potentially serious effects, including nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, weakness and mental confusion, loss of consciousness, coma, and damage to the internal organs and blood vessels.
Who is this test for?
This test can help diagnose diabetes, prediabetes, and gestational diabetes for those experiencing symptoms of hyperglycemia (high glucose levels). Symptoms of hyperglycemia include increased thirst, vision impairment, frequent urination, fatigue, weight loss, mental cloudiness, and slow-healing wounds.
We typically recommend the Glucose Fasting Test alongside the Insulin Fasting Test. You may also want to order the Comprehensive Metabolic Panel to receive a complete picture of your metabolic health.
