This test measures free and total Testosterone blood levels using a testing method called equilibrium ultrafiltration.

What is this test?

The Testosterone Free/Total Equilibrium Test measures T levels using equilibrium ultrafiltration, which is a method that provides greater test sensitivity.

Testosterone is a male sex hormone (androgen) that is responsible for many important functions in the body, including regulating body composition, supporting muscle building, maintaining sexual health and libido, and more. Testosterone is secreted and performs these functions in both men and women, although at lower quantities in women.

A Testosterone deficiency can lead to symptoms like erectile and sexual dysfunction, fatigue, mood swings, depression and anxiety, fat gain (especially around the middle), negative changes in body composition, lack of energy, interrupted sleep, and more.

Free Testosterone is the amount of unbound Testosterone in the blood, while total Testosterone is the complete amount of both bound and unbound Testosterone. Both measurements are important for diagnosing a potential deficiency due to how Testosterone is utilized by the body.

Equilibrium ultrafiltration is a process that provides more precise methods using innovative lab techniques.

Who is this test for?

This test is for men who are experiencing symptoms of a Testosterone deficiency who may want additional testing beyond the standard Free and Total Testosterone test.

We typically recommend the Complete Lab Panel for Men to evaluate the potential for a Testosterone deficiency, because this panel tests multiple factors for a complete picture of your hormonal and overall health. The Testosterone Free/Total Equilibrium Test may help for more granular Testosterone level results. For women, we recommend the Complete Lab Panel for Women which includes a Testosterone test as well as other biomarkers of health.
